We offer a multitude of services and procedures here at our Austin & Lakeway dental office. Here's some examples of some of the patients that we get to help out. We had a patient that wanted to replace all of the silver fillings on their mouth, we were able to replace all of the old amalgam fillings with resin or tooth colored fillings since her older fillings were smaller. For another patient, they had a similiar situation, but the old silver fillings had cracked and weakened the tooth and the old fillings took up more than half of the tooth. In this case we were able to do porcelain crowns that looked natural and are very durable. For a family that we see, we saw the parents and their kids and took care of their basic dental checkups and cleanings. For some other patients we completed Zoom Teeth whitening which is a great and easy way to get whiter teeth. For another patient, they wanted the gaps closed between some of their teeth and other teeth straightened so we started the Invisalign process. We also have many patients come to use because they're scared of the dentist and come to us for sedation dentistry. We have many patients that have missing teeth that we help with dental implants and denture services....And finally we have many patients who come to us that are unhappy with their smiles and want a great long term permanent solution. For many of these patients we used porcelain veneers to improve their smile and help them get the smile that they've always wanted. Visit out before and after section of our website to see more!

Replacing old silver fillings

Replacing old silver fillings is a procedure that we perform here at Dr Tejas Patel's office routinely. Many times there are concerns with old silver fillings as they tend to weaken teeth and eventually can cause teeth to fracture. Also, if the edges of the filling are sealed, that is a concern as well as if there is cavities or tooth decay around or below the silver filling. We'll be wrapping up our Facebook "like" drive for the Lake Travis Thrift Shop this weekend! So far we've raised $125 to donate to their Small Miracles Fund. The Lake Travis Thrift Shop does so much for the people of Lake Travis, especially those in need. We wanted to show our appreciation by committing to raise money to help them. We used Facebook and had friends and patients "like" our Facebook Page. For each new "like" we donated $1 towards this great local charity! We've also tried to help them periodically through the Bee Caves Rotary Club and donating toothbrushes and toothpaste along with other Dentists.

In our Austin & Lakeway Dental office we've been using a soft tissue laser to perform various procedures like laser gum contouring for gummy smiles, cosmetic gum procedures, and frenectomy procedures for braces/orthodontic treatment. Now we're offering laser treatment for the following:
•Treating of Aphtous Ulcers and Herpetic Lesions
•Reducing bacteria associated with gum disease and helping sterilize the gum pockets after periodontal treatment

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to your teeth. They can help straighten teeth, close spaces between teeth, fixed chipped, broken, or worn down teeth, whiten teeth, and just make your smile look more natural and youthful. There are many reasons why many of our guests have completed smile makeovers using porcelain veneers. Here are some pros and cons of porcelain veneers.

Pros: Porcelain veneers can help you achieve the smile that you've always wanted. A smile makeover with porcelain veneers usually takes a few visits and can be completed in a few months. So within a few months you can take years off your face and look more youthful! If you want your teeth to be white and you've tried whitening but want them even whiter, porcelain veneers can help. If you've had severely discolored or stained teeth, like with tetracycline stain, veneers are a great option. Another advantage of the veneers is that the color of the final veneers is permanent and will not change with habits like drinking coffee or red wine. Porcelain veneers can also look as perfect as you want or natural as you want. Talented Ceramic artists are trained to create life like porcelain veneers. Porcelain is an extremely strong and durable material and lasts years and years. Porcelain veneers are individual pieces so they're as easy to floss and brush as your own teeth. Porcelain veneers are made with porcelain and no metal, so there are no dark gray lines that look unnatural. With today's technology and materials, porcelain veneers can be made very thin which requires little to no tooth preparation or removal.

Cons: The biggest disadvantage of porcelain veneers is that there is usually removal of tooth structure to prepare for the veneers. The amount of tooth removal is usually a millimeter or less and does not require having as much tooth structure removed as for a crown or "cap". But today, things are different and we are able to be even more conservative in many cases and remove little or no tooth structure. Porcelain veneers can be a considerable investment. It's true that the cost of a veneer can cost over $1000 for a single veneer. But again, today there are ways to set up monthly payment plans to make things so much easier. Some people get concerned that veneers look too "fake." If using a talented Dentist who has training in cosmetic dentistry and using a talented and skilled ceramics lab, the result can be extremely natural!

Local Dentist Steps Up to Help Children in Impoverished Countries
Dr Tejas Patel of Lakeway, Texas has decided to take a major challenge head on-attempting to hike to the 10,047 ft summit of The Middle Sister, near Bend, Oregon- to benefit children throughout the world.

The Event occurs over Labor Day Weekend (September 4-6, 2010) in the Three Sisters Wilderness. In Oregon, Dr. Patel joins a team of similarly motivated dentists from across the country, coming together in support of the Climb for a Cause annual fundraising event.

This climb will be the 13th annual in support of CFAC, an international non-profit organization that funds oral health education and treatment projects in Nepal and Guatemala. It is Dr. Patel’s first climb with the organization.

“I recently have done dental mission trips to Peru and Nicaragua and saw how much individuals in third world countries are in need of dental care and how there is just no access for them to get dental care. Today, there's so many options for getting whiter teeth in Austin. Whitening is a great and affordable way to brighten up your smile and make your smile look younger! From over the counter products to Laser Whitening at the Dental Office, here's a summary of some good options!
1. Over the counter products - Whitening toothpastes are great, just make sure they're not too abrasive or gritty in texture. This can slowly abrade the enamel over time. Crest White Strips work well for lightly stained teeth and also for younger individuals. Treatment time is usually 30 minutes each day over a course of 2 weeks. White strips are usually around $50 or below. We highly recommend Sonicare Toothbrushes (a little over $100), they're great at keeping stain off your teeth!
2. At the Dental Office- Custom made whitening trays are based off of a mold taken at your Dentist's office. From the molds, models are made and thin plastic trays are molded over the models. You're given a whitening gel to fill the trays with and then place the tray over your teeth. The tray is worn for about 60-90 minutes. Depending on the level of stain, you may have to use the trays for up to 2 weeks. Results are usually very good with the trays if they're worn consistently for the recommended treatment time. Price of trays can vary with each office, but range from $100-250 for both upper and lower trays. You can expect your teeth to get several shades lighter with proper use.
3. Laser Teeth Whitening- Zoom is the most popular Laser Whitening Treatment available. Upon your visit to the Dentist office, your teeth are first polished and cleaned. Then a barrier is placed over the lips, gums, and cheeks as protection. Whitening gel is then placed over your teeth and then activated by a Laser Light that shines on your teeth. The procedure usually takes about 1.5hrs. Laser Whitening definitely has the most dramatic effects, because the results are instant. We usually see teeth getting many shades lighter, just after 1.5hrs. Price of Zoom can vary from $400 up to $700.

Here's some before and after pictures of a smile using dental implants. Our patient had been missing his front tooth for years. He lost the front tooth from an accident when he was a child. Since then he wore a flipper to replace the missing front tooth. The flipper was removable and didn't look or feel as natural as our patient desired. After an implant was placed we placed a porcelain crown over the implant to improve the smile. Our patient says that having his tooth back has been life-changing!
