Mobile Loaves and Fishes

This past weekend, Dr. Patel volunteered through the Mobile Loaves and Fishes ministry where he provided toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash to those less fortunate in the Austin community.
Dr. Patel volunteers through the Bee Cave Rotary Club in conjunction with the Lake Hills Church. He has been a volunteer  with Mobile Loaves and Fishes for the past 2 years and actively participates with them every couple of months. Dr. Patel plans on continuing his involvement with the organization and hopes to provide more toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouthwash to those in need.

Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Inc. (MLF) is a social outreach ministry for the homeless that was founded in 1998. The goal of the ministry is to distribute food and basic needs to the homeless in various communities. There are 2 teams in the organization-those who make the truck ready for deliveries and those you go out and hand out the food, clothing, and other items to the community. Healthy Holiday Eating

During the holidays, your healthy eating habits may fly out the window with all the delicious snacks, desserts, and holiday meals in front of you.  It is very tempting to overindulge during this season.  So how can you stay on track this season without missing out on the great food? Whether you’re hosting a holiday party, going to several parties, or visiting your favorite restaurant this season, listen up because we found some great holiday food swaps to help you out!

(For more holiday tips and swaps, visit

·       Skip the dinner rolls! Grab the veggies and dip instead! Veggies will help you feel fuller faster as rolls usually lead to over eating and more consumption of refined carbs.

Skip the white potatoes! Go for some sweet potatoes instead! White potatoes can’t match the nutrition found in sweet potatoes!

Skip the egg nog! Pick up some sugar-free hot chocolate instead! Sugary beverages can pack tons of calories and fat, so choose wisely!

Skip the holiday ham! Pick turkey instead! Turkey provides a lean protein, as ham can                                be loaded with sodium!

Brush by Brush

As a strong philanthropist and supporter of various charity organizations, Dr. Tejas Patel has developed a giving back concept entitled Brush by Brush. The idea behind Brush by Brush is to provide at least 500 toothbrushes and dental hygiene products to those in need each year.  Dr. Patel has committed to ensuring this happens. Beneficiaries of this program include local and international non-profit organizations such as local schools and Rotary clubs, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and international organizations during his volunteer travel trips.

By creating Brush by Brush, Dr. Patel’s main goal is to help those in need by providing them with tools to develop and maintain their oral health. Also, he hopes to inspire other dental offices and professionals to donate to those in needs through other organizations of which they are involved. As the holiday season comes and goes, remember those in need and think of ways you can help. If you would like more information about Brush by Brush, please do not hesitate to contact one of our offices.

Holiday Gifts Shopping Trends

As the Thanksgiving holiday is now behind us, we can begin to look forward to the December holiday season which means a lot gift-giving and exchanges. This year, according to consumer reports, holiday shopping is at an all-time high. With shopping specials such as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday,” consumers flocked to find the best holiday deals and cross off items on their Christmas list. If you weren't able to take advantage of these deals, don’t worry! There are still several bargains out there.

One of the largest holiday shopping trends this year is online shopping.  Cutting out the travel, pushing through other shoppers, and waiting in long lines are only a few of the perks you can avoid by online shopping. Websites such as Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target also offer lower prices for some items online.  And several retailers are extending their “Cyber Monday” deals for the rest of the week or month. Another big shopping trend this season is custom or home-made items which add more of a personal touch to any gift. Etsy is an online shopping community which allows consumers to find nearly anything they can imagine, from custom artwork to clothing and collectibles.

However you decide to shop this year, begin by doing some research on what you want.  You never know what you can find! And remember if you can’t find that perfect gift, try to make it yourself! It’s not always about the gift itself but rather the thought put into it.  Happy shopping!

Fall Trends Alert

The cooler weather has arrived and autumn is in full swing.  It’s time to get out your jackets, scarves, hats, and boots! One of the best things about fall in Texas is that we can actually start to wear warmer clothing. This fall, it’s all about bold and beautiful colors-golds, deep blues, purples, and greens! All great choices for clothing and makeup!
Another big trend this fall are statement pieces. A bold necklace, bracelet, or earrings can really make your entire look stand out. As an Austin native, Kendra Scott has created her own brand of beautiful statement pieces worn by celebrities everywhere. Kendra has also come up with her ‘Color Bar’ where can design your own pieces with the colors you choose! It is really convenient and I guarantee you will get exactly what you were looking for! For more information and Kendra Scott products, visit http://www.kendrascott.com
No matter what trends you use this fall, remember it is really about you and what you like. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and patterns. Make your own fashion statement.  It is Austin after all. Let’s keep it weird.

Happy Halloween

At Lakeway Smiles, we want to wish all of our customers a safe and Happy Halloween. Do you know the story behind the celebration?  “It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.”

Remember to be safe if you’re taking the kids out trick or treating! Have a Happy Halloween!

Dental Tip - Flossing

Flossing is one of the most effective methods of keeping your teeth and gums healthy yet many overlook it. Don’t skip this step in your oral routine. Follow these simple rules for proper flossing techniques: (www.mayoclinic.com)

·         Don't skimp. Break off about 18 inches (46 centimeters) of dental floss. Wind most of the floss around the middle finger on one hand, and the rest around the middle finger on the other hand — leaving about 1 inch (3 centimeters) to floss your first tooth.
·         Take it one tooth at a time. Use your thumbs and forefingers to gently pull the floss from the gumline to the top of the tooth to scrape off plaque. Rub the floss against all sides of the tooth. Unwind to fresh floss as you progress to the next tooth.
·         Keep it up. If you have trouble getting floss through your teeth, try the waxed variety. If it's hard to manipulate the floss, use a floss holder or an inter-dental cleaner — such as a dental pick or stick designed to clean between the teeth.

Dental Tip - Healthy Brushing

Many of us don’t put much thought into brushing and can develop bad habits of improper brushing. When you brush your teeth, keep in mind these important tips to keep them healthy: (www.mayoclinic.com)
·         Brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, don't rush. Take enough time to do a thorough job.
·         Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, especially if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.
·         Practice good technique. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle against your teeth and brush with short back-and-forth motions. Remember to brush the inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue. Avoid vigorous or harsh scrubbing, which can irritate your gums.
·         Keep your equipment clean. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air dry until using it again. Don't routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria.
·         Know when to replace your toothbrush. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

Dr. Patel Awarded Fellowship from ICOI

This week, Dr. Patel was in Orlando, FL for the ICOI World Congress meeting where he was awarded a Fellowship from the organization for his achievements in Implant Dentistry. www.icoi.org). The ICOI strives to provide high quality education to their members in order for them to better serve their patients.

Dr. Patel visits Africa!

One of the most rewarding experiences in life is being able to give back to others while doing what you love to do. Dr. Patel recently was able to combine his love for dentistry, giving back, and travel into a volunteer trip to Africa in August. Dr. Patel and his family traveled to Tswalu Kalhari in Southern Africa and Livingstone Town in Zambia.

On his trip, Dr. Patel began by volunteering at the Tswalu Dental Clinic which is a part of the Tswalu Foundation created by Johnathan Oppenheim. The foundation’s mission is to develop a platform where visitors can get involved in the community and contribute in various ways. Dental professionals can volunteer to treat patients and educated them on oral health. Actively involved in this foundation, Dr. Patel with the help of Carey Barrs of Benco Dental Supplies, donated over 150 toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. He also helped treat many patients and donated much needed dental supplies and equipment to the community. Dr. Patel and his family also visited the local school in Tswalu where they donated school supplies to the children and teachers. It was truly an amazing experience for Dr. Patel and the residents were extremely welcoming and exited to meet him and his family.

Dr. Patel also had the opportunity to visit Zambia where he traveled to the Nakatindi village and community school located outside of Livingstone town. With an estimated population of 3000 people and average household income of $80 per month, Sanctuary Retreats (a philanthropy project) works to help these communities improve their general well-being. This includes the areas of infrastructure, skill development, education, future welfare, and most importantly health and dental care. The Nakatindi village has 500 children of which 2/3 are orphaned. Seventy-five percent of residents are affected by HIV. Dr. Patel and his family are strong supporters of this cause and financially donated to help improve the village and its community school. There are several community projects that are working to improve the village including a feeding program to provide lunch to the children, a vegetable garden, and future hopes to build a medical clinic to provide healthcare.

Reflecting on his trip and the memories and experiences he has received, Dr. Patel says, “Visiting this village was an extremely profound experience. It was a mix of sorrow and happiness. The happiness came from seeing the smiles and enthusiasm and excitement of all of the children within the community. They were so joyful and content, even though they have so little and even with the alarming conditions that they live in. The sorrow comes from knowing that they are not only orphaned, and barely get one meal a day, but also that many of them are affected by HIV and that don't have access to healthcare or medicines that could improve their health. I’m so grateful to have had such an experience for myself and for my family to be able to see how many others live on the other side of the world. It definitely reinforced the appreciation and gratitude for all that we are so fortunate to have. Seeing the world, the entire volunteer experience, and being able to give back to others is a truly rewarding experience”.

With plans to return to these villages, Dr. Patel will continue to pursue his passions of dentistry and giving back by supporting these causes both now and in the future. He cannot place a value on this trip and knows his experiences and memories will always be priceless. Dr. Patel has traveled internationally as a volunteer dentist to Nicaragua, Brazil, Peru, and now Africa and hopes to continue to educate and treat children and adults in underprivileged communities.

Answers to Popular Dental Questions

I see several patients every day and many have questions, fears, and concerns regarding their dental health.  I have addressed some of the concerns below. If you have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

1.       Can dental X-rays cause cancer? Keep in mind; you’re exposed to more radiation than you’d get from a full set of dental X-rays if you’re outside for an hour or more.  Not having X-rays done can cause more serious dental issues down the road.

2.       Any useful info about porcelain veneers I need to know? Veneers are porcelain coverings/shims of the front (labial) aspect of the tooth surface, which are bonded to tooth.  We offer smile imagining where you can see what your smile can potentially look like after the procedure. Porcelain veneers allow light to penetrate the wafer shell and reflect only from the inside surface of the tooth structure. This penetration of light produces a translucency which is very natural looking and attractive. Porcelain veneers will last for a long time provided routine care is taken to maintain good oral health, say up to 7 to 10 years or more. Porcelain Veneers may need replacement if they are damaged or chipped or indicate loss of bonding with the underlying tooth structure. The following are a few suggestions to maximize the life of veneers:
a.       Practice good oral home care. Decay in the underlying tooth structure may result if regular oral hygiene is not maintained.
b.      Avoid grinding or clenching your teeth since these actions put tremendous forces on the teeth and can break or move the veneer.
c.       Avoid biting on hard things, such as bottle caps, fingernails, ice cubes etc.

3.       Is whitening safe? Yes. Extensive research indicates that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. Many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available.
I will be answering more of your questions and concerns throughout the next few months. Please feel free to contact us anytime regarding any of our procedures.

Happy Back to School Week Austin

I know it’s tough getting back into the school routine, but here are some fun reads to get you and your kids ready to go back to school.
The summer holiday was over and young Jack returned to Wicor school. Only two days later his teacher phoned his mother to tell her that Jack was misbehaving. 'Wait a minute,' mother said. 'I had Jack with me for six weeks and I never called you once when he misbehaved.
Teacher : John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?
John : You told me to do it without using tables.
School Learning Nathan comes home from his first day at school. Mother asks, 'What did you learn today?' He replies, 'Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow.'
Mia: I think we need a new teacher. Mum: Why is that? Mia: Our teacher doesn't know anything, she keeps asking us for the answers.

Have a great first week kids, parents, and teachers!
